Historic Structures Have Weathered The Test of Time
It’s hard to imagine using something daily that was built in the 1800’s, but that is what happens every day in Putnam County with its nine covered bridges. What a marvel of workmanship! These structures have weathered the test of time and although each construction is similar, it varies somewhat, depending on the builder.
Wood from nearby farms was used in the construction process with a plan for each type of wood. Cedar was used for the roof, oak for the floors, tulip poplar for the supports and pine for the sides. Tulip poplar was abundant and a chemical found in the wood was known to repel termites and other harmful bugs.
The next time you visit our covered bridges or just drive through them to get to work or in traveling, take time to slow down and look at the construction, the work, the design, the woods and marvel at the sturdiness and durability that these bridges have provided throughout the years. There’s so much more to these lovely bridges than just a way to get over the water beneath!
