This 100-year-old Queen Anne Victorian, registered as a National Historic Site and converted into a hotel, is two blocks from both the heart of downtown Greencastle and the DePauw University campus and offers elegant style with an unforgettable experience!
Doc’s Inn offers three large, elegantly furnished rooms with loads of antiques and an innkeeper to help with local information, recommendations and reservations. The main floor offers guests an open-concept area, with living room, a dining room great for family meals, a music room great for family games, a grand staircase, and fireplace — all for entertainment and relaxation for guests.
The Inn was purchased by Dr. Steve Kissel and wife, Janna, early in 2017. This brought the total number of physicians who have owned this historic house to three. That is how the name Doc’s Inn came to be suggested by the Kissel’s daughter, Kaitlyn and her husband Micah. The home was built by surgeon John Leatherman and wife, Lucy, in 1893. It was also owned by Dr Rhea and wife, Genevieve, in the 1940’s. Dr. Detloff also lived in the home briefly.
Dr. Leatherman’s daughter’s, Rita, was married at the home and her wedding picture can still be seen in the Cammack Photography collection of the DePauw University archives. Dr. Rhea’s wife, Genevieve, lived out the remainder of her life in the home and it was purchased by the Catholic church after her passing.
When the Kissel’s purchased the home they knew they wanted to do something special with all of its beautiful, historical features, and decided to share the history of the home with others by opening Doc’s Inn-an elegant look into the historic past of small town Indiana.
The home has been extensively renovated by the Kissels with the help of family and friends and it has been restored to its original grandeur. Floors and wood work have been restored. Hardware used in 1893 for window sashes and hinges have been cleaned and restored. There is even an original Tiffany lamp in the entry that was in place when WWI started, as well as the leaded glass front doors. The upstairs bathroom was remodeled by Mrs. Kissel and her son Daniel with design by daughter-in-law Heather. It is truly a work of art by family and friends. The graphic designs for the Inn were done by Ted Kissel.
Guests are now welcome to come step back into time and enjoy elegant style and an unforgettable experience at Doc’s Inn!
