Founded in 1837, DePauw University is a nationally recognized leading liberal arts college located in Putnam County, Indiana, and home to one of the nation’s first schools of music.
DePauw’s School of Music, founded in 1884, launched the 21st-Century Musician Initiative in 2013 and has positioned DePauw to take the lead among schools of music nationwide in responding to challenges in today’s modern musical landscape. Students, faculty, staff and alumni of the School of Music are leading a national dialogue about repositioning curiosity, creativity and collaboration to be at the heart of musicmaking; establishing music’s relevance in our communities; and offering curricular and cocurricular opportunities to prepare students for life after college.
The School of Music prides itself on five learning goals, stating that DePauw musicians will:
1. Develop artistic excellence, creativity and critical-thinking skills as the foundation for all they do.
2. Engage audiences, with special attention to access, inclusivity and awareness.
3. Act as sociallyminded entrepreneurial musicians by inventing, developing and managing projects for community impact.
4. Recognize and champion diversity of all kinds and work ceaselessly to improve inclusivity in all that they do.
5. Leverage technology in the creation and dissemination of music.
Housed in the Judson and Joyce Green Center for the Performing Arts, the public programming offered by the School of Music provides residents of Putnam and surrounding counties with myriad opportunities to engage in music and the arts. From world-renowned guests who visit as part of the Green Guest Artist Series and Broadway Artist Series to performances by DePauw’s orchestra, band, choir, jazz ensemble and other student ensembles, nearly 200 public music performances take place between August and May of each year.
