Bicycling is becoming increasingly popular in Putnam County. Cyclists searching for safe and scenic places to ride have discovered that our area offers great bicycle routes, punctuated by historic covered and iron bridges, quiet country lanes, and friendly neighbors. For years, touring our country roads by bicycle has been a popular attraction for DePauw students and faculty; it’s not uncommon to see groups of college riders from early spring until late fall.
People Pathways continues to expand it’s multi-use trail system with the opening of the new Putnam Nature Trail, a 2.6 mile smooth packed stone trail extending southwest from Limedale along the former Pennsylvania Railroad. The new Campus Link Trail is a key connector to previously developed trail segments allowing access to schools, retail areas, industries and the Big Walnut Sports Park.
Bike With a Biologist allows cyclists to ride the Greencastle to Fillmore section of the Vandalia Bicycle Trail while learning about native plants and wildlife habitats. June of 2020 will see Putnam County hosting a major cycling event with three bicycle routes, followed by a “Gravel Ride” during September. You’ll find bicycle trail info at People Pathways or on Facebook.
