Consider a pleasant summer evening and the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere of the Hazel Day Longden Theatre. This rustic two story frame barn was built in 1918 by the late Grafton Longden, Sr. Given to the Putnam County Playhouse in 1983 by Mrs. Hazel Day Longden, it has been converted into an intimate 198 seat theatre.

Downtown Greencastle is the home of a new art gallery. The Bearded Painter features the talent of local artist Rick Johnston. While Putnam County is known for its abundance of the arts, what makes Rick’s story so captivating and a bit of a miracle is how Rick, who had never before been artistic, became an artist.
In 2015, Rick Johnston, was a supervisor for Carrier. True to his hardworking character, he was on his seventy-second straight day of work when he suffered what doctors initially thought could be a stroke. He had a neurological disorder. His wife Cammie recalls “his brain was telling his body that he’s had a stroke, but he hasn’t and the doctors couldn’t explain exactly what was wrong.”

Putnam county resident Max Blackmore has been buying and selling antiques for about 65 years. In 2000, he and his wife Darlen opened an antique store on the south side of the courthouse square in Greencastle. His wife was waiting for him to come up with a name for the store and after pondering for some time, he decided it would be called Darlen’s Collection. Darlen managed the store in those early years until she passed in 2010. Now Max spends his afternoons minding the collection and talking with visitors, including DePauw students that frequently stop by for a chat. Photo: Max Blackmore

Just northeast of the Putnam County Courthouse at 25 East Franklin Street is the historic Pfeiffenberger House. Though it is unclear exactly what kind of home was first built on this site first (likely a log cabin or Federal style residence), we do know it burned in the Greencastle fire of 1874 that destroyed all of the properties on East Franklin Street and nearly all of downtown Greencastle.

Historic Structures Have Weathered The Test of Time
It’s hard to imagine using something daily that was built in the 1800’s, but that is what happens every day in Putnam County with its nine covered bridges. What a marvel of workmanship! These structures have weathered the test of time and although each construction is similar, it varies somewhat, depending on the builder.

When you think of elk, you imagine the habitat of western states, not northern Putnam County. So, what is an elk farm doing in the northern hills of Putnam County? Bugle Valley began over one hundred years ago as a typical farm overseen by four generations of the Clodfelter family and today father Gene and son Chet manage a herd of over 75 head of elk at Bugle Valley Elk Farm.

Bicycling is becoming increasingly popular in Putnam County. Cyclists searching for safe and scenic places to ride have discovered that our area offers great bicycle routes, punctuated by historic covered and iron bridges, quiet country lanes, and friendly neighbors. For years, touring our country roads by bicycle has been a popular attraction for DePauw students and faculty; it’s not uncommon to see groups of college riders from early spring until late fall.

Shuee & Sons TV & Appliance has been on the west side of the Greencastle downtown square for as long as most of us can remember. Established in 1970, Shuee’s Great Buys Plus, also known as Shuee & Sons TV & Appliance, began in the late 1960s when Bob and Carolyn Shuee bought into an existing business and soon thereafter purchased the company. In 1984, Shuee’s expanded into Clay County with a store located in Brazil. Still going strong after 50 years is testimony that Shuee’s has loyal customers that depend on them for quality products and competitive prices. Friendly customer service is a keystone of their mission to serve Putnam, Clay and surrounding counties.
